This affects everyone who drives
at work, from the self employed to the Multi National
Company. We all have a responsibility to manage
our Work
Related Road Safety.
As an employer you have a legal responsibility to manage the road safety of all your drivers to ensure others are not put at risk by their driving activities. Driving is often an area overlooked when considering the continuing professional development of your employees, despite some staff who spend the majority of their working day behind the wheel of a vehicle.
A third of all traffic collisions involve somebody who is at work. This may account for over 20 fatalities and 250 serious injuries every week.
As a matter of Health and Safety you should consider the risks that driving imposes on your staff and other members of the public. One simple control measure you could consider is driver training. Why wait until your employee is convicted of a motoring offence or involved in a collision.
If you employ more than five employees you should have a written policy to cover your employees work related road safety. Have you? |

Most importantly the knowledge that you take the welfare of your staff seriously and have taken a positive step towards the Health & Safety of your employees and other road users by incorporating a programme of continuing professional development for all your drivers.
In April 2008 The New Corporate Manslaughter Bill will make it easier to prosecute organisations for manslaughter following a work related death. Now is the time to check that your Health and Safety policies and procedures incorporate your drivers.
UPTWOSPEED can advise you in the preparation of these documents and also assist with risk assessments and driver training for your employees. It is irrelevant how many of your employees drive but you need to record this policy if you employ more than five.
Do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your Fleet Driver requirements. |
