Mobile Telephones –
Useful or a Menace
|
|
| |
| Reaction times for drivers using hand-held phones are
30 per cent slower than reaction times for drivers who
have been drinking at the legal limit. |
| |
| The majority of drivers seem to have one or have access
to them. What we need to remember is that using a mobile
phone to have a conversation or send a text message whilst
driving is not a good idea. Even with a hands free kit
it is difficult and distracting to hold a conversation
with someone and apply full concentration to your driving.
My advice would be engine, on phone off. Highway code
Rule 97. |

The law is clear on this subject.
If you are caught using a mobile phone (not hands
free) whilst driving it will cost you £60
and three points on your licence. Many motorists
obviously believe that the risk of been caught is
low or the penalty is worth the risk of being caught.
Ever-day I witness drivers of all types of vehicles
using their phones to talk or text whilst driving.
Some of these drivers are travelling in excess of
70 M.P.H. on a busy motorway!
Following a meeting in Leeds I walked to the Railway
Station. This took me about 6 minutes. In that short
distance I witnessed four drivers on the phone.
This is not uncommon and you do not have to stray
far from your doorstep to witness this irresponsible
behaviour.
Don’t kid yourself that you can control your
vehicle whilst taking or making this call. Those
of you who text on the move, are putting others
in grave danger. Your driving is considered to be
dangerous, if texting whilst driving. The penalties
for this offence are much greater. |

Sobering thoughts - A simple call could be free depending
on your tariff. But the tariff if you get caught using
a mobile phone whilst driving could be anything from £60
to 14 years in prison. It is not worth it.
If you are an employer, do you have a Work-Related Road
Safety Policy for your employees who drive at work? Many
companies are now banning the use of mobile phones whilst
driving. Even the self employed have to address this.
The only difference is that if you employ more than 5
people, your policy must be recorded.
If your employee is caught using a phone whilst driving
for work purposes, you may also be liable to prosecution.
If they were to go to jail you could be sharing the same
cell with them.
