ADVANCED DRIVING SKILLS |
| |
| |
This is a guide to the key elements which form the basis for all our driving and riding sessions. All our driving sessions are based on the Police Advanced System of driving, which will raise your driving and riding to a new level. In order to gain the maximum benefit you will use your own vehicle. The key to all driving and riding is observations and many participants in these sessions are surprised at their improvement in this one vital area. Other skills we will consider are:- |
| |
| |
VEHICLE CONTROLS |
Develop acceleration sense and power management
Braking techniques and emergency braking exercises
Effective use of gear ratios
Sequential and block gear changing
Use of automatic gear systems
Effective steering methods
Improved use of mirrors and blind spot awareness
Signalling where and when appropriate |
| |
| |
OBSERVATION |
Development of advanced observations. Extending forward observation and making use of cross views. Understanding observation links. |
| |
| |
PLANNING |
Driving Plans based on what you can see, cannot see and reasonably expect to develop. |
| |
| |
ANTICIPATION |
Observe and accurately assess the behaviour and movements of other road users. |
| |
| |
SYSTEM |
Develop a systematic approach to your driving and hazard management ensuring you are in the correct position, speed and gear on the road. |
| |
| |
CONCENTRATION |
A systematic approach to observations, planning and hazard management aids concentration and can lead to reduced stress. |
| |
| |
POSITIONING |
Correct position for all road, traffic and weather conditions. Develop hazard awareness and positioning for actual and potential hazards. Correct positioning to maximise safety, stability and observations. |
| |
| |
BEND ASSESSMENT |
Learn how to accurately assess each and every bend to maintain progress and negotiate the bend in safety. This allows you to stop in the distance you can see to be clear. |
| |
| |
CORNERING TECHNIQUES |
Understand the forces affecting your vehicle. Corner safely whilst controlling these forces. Use your approach position to extend observations and stability. Link bends and maintain progress. |
| |
| |
OVERTAKING |
Identify the different types of overtaking. Make use of the overtaking position when other hazards are present. Enhanced observations and assessment lead to improved judgement. Correct gear selection to execute overtakes safely under full control. |
| |
| |
PROGRESS |
Utilise the above skills to maintain safe, lawful progress particularly through bends and when overtaking. Use appropriate progress in relation to your safety bubble. |
| |
| |
CONTINGENCY PLANS & ESCAPE ROUTES |
Develop a continuous awareness of roadside furniture and the presence of other road users. This enables you to plan an escape route to deal with the unexpected actions of these other road users. |
| |
| |
THIRD PARTY PERCEPTION |
Consideration of how other road users visualise and perceive your driving or riding on the public roads. This information is frequently sought by the Police through media requests following serious and fatal road collisions. |
| |
| |
VEHICLE SYMPATHY |
Systematic driving/riding provides less wear and tear on the vehicle. Enjoy your vehicles performance with an eco-friendly approach to the use of gears. The result is lower running and fuel costs. |
